Linguaphone Connect is a service proposed by Linguaphone, in conjunction with instructor-led language classes. This platform was developed by an international team of pluridisciplinary media and video game specialists, along with instructors and cognitive scientists, and revolutionizes language-learning with a fun and efficient pedagogical approach.
- Video Boosters: over 1500 video-based lessons created by language teachers, all based on authentic content like current and recent clips from films, TV series, television news, music videos and documentaries...
- Photo Vocabs: gamified visual dictionaries covering 400 topics, to help expand vocabulary in specific areas
- Starter Labs: a guided course of 20 animation-based lessons to get started on the right foot in learning a new language.
- Skill Boosters: a collection of 33 lessons based on videos created by YouTubers, to help learners handle real-life everyday language situations with confidence.
These different types of learning units bring video and games together in an immersive and engaging experience. They are designed to encourage short, daily practice sessions, and are especially designed for teenagers and young adults registered in an educational institution, producing an innovative learning experience providing both linguistic and cultural immersion in the language being learned.
Linguaphone Connect offers the opportunity to take adaptive Assessment Tests, calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Good to know: Linguaphone Connect has a responsive site design, meaning it can be used on any kind of connected device (desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile phone).
Authentic video (clips from films, TV series, television news, music videos...) directly appeals to the emotions of the student, thus unlocking the condition for effective learning. New video-based learning units on Linguaphone Connect are published on a weekly basis, thus staying current with news and trends as reflected to students by their environment and by social media. This relevance is why students prefer authentic videos to those produced to artificially re-create language situations.
Our approach provides cultural as well as linguistic immersion. Besides the linguistic advantage, authentic videos offer a rich learning experience in the context of the cultural and social norms of a language, both general (applicable to all countries speaking the language), and specific (applicable to a particular region or register of the language). This reinforces the idea that mastering a language is not just mastering the lexis and syntax, but also other cultural and societal aspects of the language.
Since creators of entertainment video strive to depict a language as it is actually and naturally spoken in everyday life (accent, speed of speech, choice of words), the authentic videos on Linguaphone Connect help students become familiar with the cadences, prosody and varied registers they will encounter in the language. Consolidated with well-structured exercises, this approach helps students accept that one need not understand every word or expression in a dialogue to derive meaning from it and construct communication.
A useful and engaging learning resource for teachers and students alike
Based on an immersive language learning approach, both from a linguistic and cultural point of view, Linguaphone Connect features authentic, engaging content to help students increase and enhance their contact with the target language. Linguaphone Connect by no means seeks to replace the teacher, but is a complementary resource that helps teachers and students build on the classroom experience.
- Approved by the French Ministry of Education
The pedagogy and the course units on which Linguaphone Connect is based have been evaluated and approved by the French National Ministry of Education.
- evaluation by three language learning experts from the Directorate for Digital Education (DDE),
- listing in the EDUSCOL academic resources portal
- approved by the Academic Delegation for Education Technology (ADET) of the Academies of Paris, Créteil and Versailles.
- Approved by the academic authorities of the Ile-de-France Region (directors of departmental services for the region)
- A non-linear learning process with emphasis on comprehension
According to the French Ministry of Education, language learning is a non-linear process. Thus, Linguaphone Connect is a resource to be used in parallel to your classroom teaching, enabling a rich and varied learning experience. While Linguaphone Connect is, by design, not aligned to any specific examination body's syllabus, the skills Linguaphone Connect covers are in line with the recommendations of the French National Ministry of Education. Thus, the teacher can diversify and personalise the resource based on his or her learners, regardless of their social, cultural or geographical origin.
Our approach encourages student autonomy by enabling them to explore and discover as much content as desired. As in a game, emphasis is placed on continued effort and improvement. Basically, the score obtained for a specific exercise can never diminish. If you repeat an exercise and your new score is lower than the previous score, only the higher score is retained. We chose to place greater emphasis on scores obtained during exercises, rather than evaluations, which could be perceived as a sanction or prove discouraging for students with a weaker level in the language.
Regardless of the module used, students unlock stages in the learning unit as they play it. They are also advised to play all the stages of a unit first before repeating them to improve their score. The teacher, however, may at their discretion choose to explore any stage of the module as they deem fit.
- The opportunity to bring dialogue back into the core of the learning process
Language instruction is, first and foremost, instruction in which communication is done as much as possible in the target language. Linguaphone Connect helps you add value to time spent in class, enriching in-person speaking activities with students with relevant, current content, thus opening up a world of discussion topics.
Through the assignments, you can use Linguaphone Connect to consolidate a theme or grammar topic discussed in class. You can also adopt the flipped classroom model, where students discover points that will be taught in class ahead of the actual class session, so that precious classroom time can be dedicated to productive dialogue and oral and written production. You can always use Linguaphone Connect in class to practice a new point of lexicon or grammar, or even as a revision tool.
Linguaphone Connect is published by Entertainment Learning, an international EdTech company dedicated to creating innovative online language learning platforms designed to motivate and engage language learners. Our pedagogical approach has a focus on authentic content, short but highly interactive learning sessions, a gamified learning ecosystem, and the encouragement of effort and frequency.
Every effort has been made to make Linguaphone Connect inclusive; using the Accessibility menu, you can adjust the mode and font of the site. It's a fact that different fonts can improve learning outcomes for dyslexic students, for example.
Established in 2001 by the Council of Europe, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) defines the levels of mastery of a foreign language based on knowledge in five different domains of competence. The CEFR highly detailed, yet it can be applied to a wide range of languages. The levels range from beginner (A1) to advanced (C2). Today, these levels serve as reference points in language learning and teaching in many countries
